The Amazing Benefits of Moringa for Skin Health

Thanks to its rich nutrient profile and bursting with antioxidants, moringa supplements make a great addition to your skincare routine. But what makes moringa such a popular choice for those supporting anti-ageing skin health and chronic skin conditions such as acne?. Find out more below as I explore the amazing health benefits of moringa and how it can benefit your skin health.

What is Moringa?

Moringa oleifera is a plant native to North India, utilised for its health benefits for thousands of years. It is also known as a drumstick tree, horseradish tree or even a ben oil tree. Almost all parts of the plant are eaten or used as ingredients in traditional herbal medicine.

Moringa’s high protein and nutritional content have historically meant leaves are commonly used as a food source in many world regions (1).

Moringa is considered a ‘superfood’ packed full of healthy antioxidants and bioactive plant compounds. It is rich in vitamins and minerals such as A, C and E and iron, calcium and magnesium, plus a wide range of amino acids.

The highly nutritious leaves of the moringa tree are harvested, dried at a low temperature and milled into a fine powder to create moringa supplements. This way, its rich nutritional content is preserved, and no nutrients are lost. Moringa is also made into an oil for topical application.

Moringa Has Powerful Anti-Ageing Benefits

Moringa powder may help slow down the signs of ageing. Packed with antioxidants, it helps protect against free radical damage and oxidative stress. It also helps to protect the skin from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. This is extremely important as free radical damage harms your skin tissues, leading to wrinkles and premature ageing.

One study in postmenopausal women found that taking 1.5 teaspoons (7 grams) of moringa leaf powder every day for three months significantly increased blood antioxidant levels (2). The study concluded that taking moringa to increase antioxidant levels in the body could benefit women’s health as they get older.

Other benefits of moringa include its remarkably high vitamin C content - having about seven times more than an orange. Its vitamin C and A content help build collagen, vital for healthy skin ageing, keeping your skin youthful and plump looking. Plus, its high antioxidant content also helps rejuvenate your skin if it is dull and dry. It helps with cell turnover and self-repair to maintain that healthy glow!

Moringa’s Benefits for Acne-Prone Skin

Due to its antibacterial properties, moringa may help tackle acne breakouts on your skin and help to control sebum production. It may also help in removing blemishes, dark spots and blackheads. It also helps to reduce large open pores as it boosts collagen production.

There is also some evidence that moringa may help with skin healing, whether from pimples to wounds, reducing the risk of scarring and infection. It has anti-inflammatory properties, which can also target skin inflammation and breakouts.

Pimple and acne breakouts may also be signs of accumulation of toxins in the blood. Consuming moringa powder can help purify your blood, which can benefit clearer and healthier skin.

Moringa is also known for its beneficial effects on blood sugar balance and insulin regulation. Having excess insulin in your blood can cause your oil glands to produce more oil, increasing your risks of acne. Therefore, taking moringa supplements is another potential benefit for acne-prone skin.

Conclusion

Overall, moringa is becoming a popular choice for those supporting anti-ageing skin health and chronic skin conditions such as acne due to its exceptional health benefits and healing properties. You can also read more on my other favourite nutrient curcumin in my previous article and how that too can help support your skin health.

The good news is that the moringa herb is beneficial for your skin and provides essential nutrients to the body. Make use of this herb daily to keep your skin clear and your body healthy.
